GROW YOUR FAITH

“Progression of Spiritual Milestones”

Path to salvation

Awareness

You must first be aware God exists. Awareness is the reason for missions, Christian outreach in communities, fans holding John 3:16 signs behind the backstop at baseball games, street preachers in New York City, fish-shaped bumper stickers. God uses all these means to reveal himself.
It’s impossible to achieve the second milestone, acceptance, if you’ve never become aware of God’s existence. You then have a choice, either accept or reject God.

✝ Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

Acceptance

Awareness must be recognized before acceptance can be realized. Acceptance is the decision to believe in God and accept his offering. How often do you hear, “I don’t believe in God”? These folks acknowledge they are aware of God but have chosen not to accept him. They have weighed the evidence and chosen not to believe.
This is the proverbial fork in the road. You have a choice. Everyone who travels down the path must decide to take the right path or the wrong path. We dictate the direction. If we choose the right path, God leads the way.
Make the right choice at the fork in the road and accept God’s invitation.

✝ And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. (Hebrews 11:6)

Salvation

Forgiveness of sins and your salvation are your most important priorities. Of all the steps on your journey, salvation is the ultimate, the only requirement, the key to life and love everlasting.
The act of faith exhibited by asking God for help is the response God is seeking. Don’t wait to feel worthy to ask for salvation, because no one is worthy by their own doing. God is willing to help you fix your life, fully aware of the challenges. Pursue God, accept Jesus as your personal savior, and ask God for forgiveness.

✝ For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
✝ That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. (Romans 10:9–10)

Developing a relationship

Communication

Yes God speaks, and yes, you can hear him.
I believe the Bible is the Word of God. It is God-breathed, it is true, it is the foundation for my faith. I am also confident God speaks with us. The Bible tells us God has spoken to many people throughout the Old Testament and New Testament. We know it is possible! To say otherwise would imply either the Bible is a lie or God stopped communicating with people. Why would he stop?
I contend God doesn’t have a speaking problem, we have a hearing problem!
You say your schedule is too busy? You have a choice. Choose to spend time with God. He will make time in your day if your will is to spend it with Him. What could be more important than spending time with the God of the universe!

✝ I raise my voice to all mankind…Listen, for I have worthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right. (Proverbs 8:4–6)
✝ God speaks in different ways, and we don’t always recognize His voice. (Job 33:14 CEV)

Relationship

Our relationships with our parents, spouses and children evolve over time. So does our relationship with God. It should never stagnate, never stay the same. If it does, we’re not spending enough time developing the relationship. A couple’s conversation of their first date is much different than after twenty years of marriage.
The evolution takes place because we gain wisdom with time and experience. As we become parents, we recognize what our parents sacrificed. As we learn more about God, we have a greater appreciation for the depth of his love.
Your relationship with God will continue to mature and you will feel this intimacy. Your continued communication and obedience will strengthen your relationship, and he will become your best personal companion.

✝ The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. (Exodus 33:11)
✝ I no longer call you servants…Instead, I have called you friends… (John 15:15)

Love

The need to earn love on earth is required sometimes, but this is not unconditional love. This is contingent love. Love is contingent upon doing deeds. The more deeds you do, the more love you receive. You can never have too much love, therefore you can never do enough deeds. This is a terrible burden to bear.
Learn of God’s unconditional love. He can show you heavenly love, everlasting love. A perpetual love that does not get too busy, does not get angry with you, does not criticize you, gives you peace, relieves your burden, gives you patience and lifts the yolk of the world off your shoulders.

✝ Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. (1 John 4:7)

Trust

How do we attain the faith of Daniel, the trust in God to save us from the lions? As with human trust, it is developed over time with the maturation of the relationship. Unconditional trust involves no back up plans, no second guessing, no doubt, just trust God has everything under control.
God builds the trust. He will prove he can be trusted in your life. He will create the apparent coincidences to solve your problems, answer your questions, or allow you to make the right personal connections. It may not happen when you expect it to, and it may not be what you had in mind, but it will be perfect.

✝ Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you. (Psalm 9:10)

Obedience

Let’s face it, no one likes to be told they must obey. Obedience sounds terribly sacrificial. The fear of meeting God’s expectations is intimidating to a new Christian. After all, God’s expectations are lofty! Committing yourself to becoming obedient is a very big step, but you will soon learn that it is completely fulfilling. I know this sounds like a contradiction, but as your relationship with God matures, your interests and priorities change because you want them to, and it is satisfying.
God’s will for your life is tailored to suit you, so you may enjoy life while you fulfill his will.

✝ He (Jesus) replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” (Luke 11:28)

Fruits of the Relationship

Wisdom

God provides infinite wisdom to reveal truths which we would otherwise be unaware. Seek God’s wisdom for your personal spiritual development and discernment. Sometimes the simplest and most obvious insight can only be revealed by God. I could never have identified my own insecurities and tendencies without God’s help. After he exposed my psychological issues, my guilt was extinguished, so I included them in my book despite the embarrassing personal content. God gave me the courage to take this risk. I’m at the point of my spiritual maturity where it is more important to share this intimate exchange to help others than protect my pride.

✝ For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. (Proverbs 2:6)

Discernment

Discernment is the ability to distinguish between good and evil, right versus wrong, truth versus fiction. Deciphering the truth can be confusing. Although we may never fully understand the spirit world, heaven and hell, Satan, angels and good and evil influences in today’s world, the mere awareness may save us. These topics should be brought to the surface and discussed. I’m not afraid to oblige.
If not for spiritual guidance, what drives our daily decisions? The needs of the flesh and the wants of the self. What your flesh thinks is good, might not be good at this time. If everyone operated by the wants of their own self, conflicts and stresses would surely arise! It’s important to understand the purpose, strength and tactics of the opposition to make sure we are not deceived into thinking we are winning, when instead, we may be on the path to defeat!

✝ The One who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. (1 John 4:4)
✝ For Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 14)

Fulfillment of Purpose

God calls us to serve in different ways, based on our talents, desires and circumstances. He places us in situations, presents opportunities to witness, and gives us the tools to succeed. Whether we accept to fulfill the calling is a matter of choice.
The pinnacle of our relationship with God is to serve him by fulfilling his purpose for our life. Finding God’s will for our life is difficult. We must differentiate between our will to do something for God, and God’s will for us.
We may not feel we are ready to fulfill God’s purpose for our lives. But if God has shared his will, then trust he will also provide the means to carry it out. Have the faith to follow his guidance.

✝ No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him. (1 Corinthians 2:9)
✝ Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. (Proverbs 16:3)
✝ Do not neglect your gift. (1 Timothy 4:14)
